Dunnellon is the quintessential small Florida town, with a brick fire house, white steepled church, and a main street that runs through the heart of the community. The population is around two-thousand people, which gives a definite family feel to Dunnellon. It is the kind of place where neighbors help each other out, and expect nothing in return. There are plantation style homes that have stood since the turn of the last century and modern homes with vaulted ceilings and two car garages, such is the happy dichotomy of Dunnellon. When citizens of the town need goods or services not available in a small town, they just take a short car ride to Ocala, where they are sure to find what they need. There are numerous schools and municipalities in the surrounding area which accommodate Dunnellon’s needs.
Dunnellon is enclosed by a thick, green, living forest. The Oaks, pines, and palms all intermingle to create a lush flatwood in which there are hidden treasures. The Withlacoochee River intersects the town and allows for paddle-boarding and canoeing without having to travel far from home. Part of the Florida Greenway (a hiking trail) runs through the woods surrounding Dunnellon and is perfect for both outdoor enthusiast and the fitness minded. The clear, cool waters of Rainbow Springs, just north of Dunnellon provide a getaway from the heat of the summer months. There are airboat tours on the swampy areas around the town where one is likely to see alligators in their natural habitat. The placid natural environment of Dunnellon makes it an excellent place for retirement, or for those who are tired of the hustle and bustle of big cities. It only takes one trip to Dunnellon to understand why it is such an enchanting place.
